ANT FACTS
Ants have the ability to carry up to 50 times their own body weight depending on the species.
It is determined that ants first rose during the Cretaceous period around 130 million years ago!
Ants hear by feeling vibrations in the ground. They have special sensors on their feet and on their knees to help them interpret signals from their surroundings.
They also use their antennae and the hairs on their body to feel around while foraging for food
Ants can send chemical signals called pheromones released through their body to send messages to other ants! They can also send out warnings when danger is close by. They leave trails of pheremones leading to food sources and even use them to attract a mate.
MICE FACTS
Mice eat between 15 and 20 times a day. Because of their frequent eating habits, they prefer to build their homes near food sources.
Every winter, mice and other rodents invade an estimated 21 million homes in the USA.
Mice are good jumpers, climbers, and swimmers. In fact, mice can jump a foot into the air, making it easy to access pantries and counter tops.
Mice can spread diseases like Hantavirus and Salmonella. In fact, mice can actually carry as many as 200 human pathogens!
House mice produce between 40 and 100 droppings per day. They also constantly give off micro droplets of urine as they travel around their territory every day.
A female house mouse can give birth when they are only two months old, and they can have up to a dozen babies every three weeks. She could have as many as 150 offspring in 1 year.
Because mice have poor eye sight, they rely on smell, touch, and hearing to move around. They can hear ultrasound up to 90kHz! they also use ultrasound to communicate with one another.
Mice have teeth that never stop growing. They can grow .03 cm per day.
RAT FACTS
Rats can squeeze through openings as small as 13 mm in diameter, which is about half an inch! Also, around the size of a quarter.
Rats teeth never stop growing, so they must always be gnawing to keep them maintained. They can grow up to 5 inches a year.
The tooth enamel of rats is said to be stronger than steel.
Rats can carry at least 60 communicable diseases. They transfer diseases through saliva, contact with there droppings and urine.
Rats can chew through electrical wires, cinderblocks and even lead pipes with their razor sharp teeth.
Rats begin breeding as soon as five weeks of age and continue until about age two. Females are fertile approximately every three weeks, and during this time they have been known to mate up to 500 times in six hours. The resulting pregnancy usually lasts about three weeks, and the litter size typically ranges from 6 to 20 babies.
Rats can tread water for three days and survive being flushed down a toilet.
BED BUG FACTS
Beds are common places to see bed bugs because we spend about ⅓rd of our day laying in them. Bed bugs also infest living rooms, offices, dens, or other places where people rest, as well as buses, movie theaters, and restaurants
Bed bugs typically reside within a 5 foot radius from their host. In large infestations, they will spread out and can be found in nightstands, baseboards, electrical sockets, picture frames, and alarm clocks.
Adult bed bugs are red to brown in color and the shape and size of an apple seed. The nymphs are much more difficult to see, especially early in their instar (their immature stages). Nymphs are light-brown and about the size of a pinhead. You could see them with a magnifying glass
Although they are not cold tolerant, bed bugs can survive for days, even weeks in sub zero temperatures. You’d have to keep your bed outside for about a week or two, and the temperature must remain below freezing (32-degrees Fahrenheit) the entire time.
SPIDER FACTS
Spiders are arachnids they differ from insects in having only two parts to the body, eight legs not six, six or eight eyes (two in insects) and spinnerets on their abdomens that produce silk.
There are approximately over 30,000 different species of spider currently known.
Spiders eat large numbers of insects. Exceptionally, one spider may take hundreds of very small flies in one day.
COCKROACH FACTS
A Cockroach can hold its breath for 40 minutes!
They can run up to 3 miles in 1 hour.
Newborn cockroaches become adults in as little as 36 days.
It is believed that cockroaches originated more than 280 million years ago in the Carboniferous era
There are more than 4,000 different species of Cockroaches worldwide.
Cockroaches can live without feeding for 1 month.
The average lifespan of a cockroach is about 20 to 30 weeks depending on the accessibility to food and water.
TICK FACTS
Ticks don’t jump or fly. Instead, they crawl up low brush or grass to find a host. Then, they clasp on with their back legs and reach their front legs out to grab onto a passing animal or human. This process is called questing. Sometimes, they even drop from their perch and free fall onto a passing host
Ticks are adapted to feed for long periods of time. They bury their curved teeth deeply into the skin of a host, so they can remain securely attached for days on end to eat. It’s important to note that ticks typically require 24-48 hours of feeding before they can successfully transmit infections like Lyme disease, so prompt removal is crucial.
Ticks are actually classified as arachnids, not insects. There relatives of spiders, scorpions and mites.
MOSQUITO FACTS
Carbon dioxide is one of the main ways in which mosquitoes locate their next meal. They use a special organ called a maxillary palp to follow the smell of CO₂ released from our breath we exhale.
Mosquitos can detect CO² from 75 feet away.
There are over 3,000 different species of mosquitos throughout the world.
Mosquitos have a short life span. They have an estimated life span of 2 months.
Only female mosquitos bite!
Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading several harmful diseases such as malaria and Zika, to name a few. It is believed that as a result of this, mosquitoes are responsible for around 1 million deaths per year.
A female mosquito must deposit her eggs in water, and they develop quickly. So water is essential for their breeding.
Removing standing water is key to keeping the mosquito breeding down in your area.
WASP FACTS
Wasps can repeatedly sting. This is because their stinger is not barbed and will not come off, like a bees stinger will.
Wasps sting humans because they feel threatened. A wasp sting is a defense mechanism because its venom delivers enough pain to convince large animals, and humans, to leave them be. Wasps sting to catch their prey. Their venom is powerful enough to paralyze their prey, making it easier to transport their prey back to their nest.
Wasp sting reactions can vary from mild discomfort at sting location to death from allergic reaction know as anaphylaxis.
If you are allergic, always be sure to carry your medication prescribed by your doctor with you.
